5 Simple Ways To Freshen Up Your Home

5 Simple Ways To Freshen Up Your Home

Are you fed up of looking at the same four walls this lockdown?

Stuck at home, kids going mad, rubbish weather...are your four walls just another thing not bringing you any joy right now? Sometimes it all gets on top of us and it’s important to try and take a step back.

In this blog I want to share some simple ideas on how you freshen up your home this lockdown. It doesn’t have to be the whole house, it could be the room you spend the most time in. Maybe it’s your home office, or the kitchen where you are homeschooling the kids. There are a few simple things you could do that will bring you some extra comfort in these challenging times and help you fall back in love with your home.

One thing that helps me, is to change things up a little - move a piece of furniture or swap a cushion or lampshade over, it can make a room feel new and interesting again. You can also make small additions without spending the earth. Here’s some ideas.

1. Brighten Your Home with Everlasting Florals by Cassandra King

Flowers are always a great way to brighten your day and I love treating myself to a bunch of fresh flowers to put on my kitchen table every now and then; although since meeting @CassandraKingStylingandFlowers with her bold and beautiful preserved and everlasting flowers, I’m lucky enough to have a few vases full of her creations around my home.

A lot of you will know that I share my shop with my lovely friend Cassy. Not only does she source the most gorgeous faux flowers and dried flowers, she has an amazing creative eye for styling them. She has an array of colours available so you can keep it neutral or make it bright and bold. Whatever suits you and you can ask Cassy to create a bespoke arrangement that will complement your colour scheme and be a lovely feature in your home.

The added bonus is that with the right care these artificial flowers will be everlasting so you can enjoy them for months to come!

2. Give Your Sofa or Bed a Whole New Look with Cushions

You know that I love a cushion and I've spent a lot of time in the last year developing my offering. I now have different shaped cushions including rectangular and bolster cushions that help create a different look when styled on a bed or sofa or even for outdoor use.

Try experimenting by mixing square and rectangular shaped cushions on your bed. If you normally go for plain cushions on the sofa, how about trying adding some patterned cushions. Don’t be scared about a pattern clash, the great thing about cushions is they aren’t permanent, so you can really experiment and always move the cushions around to the next room.

You might be surprised at how much difference a couple of new cushions will make and you will enjoy your down time on the sofa even more!

3. Take Some Inspiration from Alex Crabtree's Tablescaping

Tablescaping is the art of setting your table and @AlexCrabtree is definitely the queen of this, she does it so beautifully; be sure to take a look at her Instagram feed. Focussing on details in your home and taking pleasure in experimenting with different flatlays and table settings can give your home a different feel and look.
A lot goes into this process by considering elaborate fashions, thinking about colour schemes, styling details and investing in accessories such as napkins, candles and vases. While we may not be inviting people round for dinner just yet it’s great to present your home ready for company once the lockdown is over and make it an inviting and welcoming place. Or it could just be nice to set the dining table properly for a family evening meal.

4. Invest in some Wall Art

I absolutely love the creative art prints by @Sopiko. Her work consists of producing unique artwork while being inspired by fashion and the female form. I love her work so much that I purchased an A3 version of her print entitled ‘My Lucky Chanel 2.55 bag'.  It’s a dream of mine to one day own this particular Chanel bag. I would love a vintage version. I would probably never wear it - but just treasure it and look at it! I love Sopiko’s illustrative style, and her link with fashion. Her prints all have a fashion theme, whether it’s a street scene or a product itself. She adds that extra touch with a little glitter, so even in the darker evenings the prints catch the light.  I love seeing this image on my wall, not just for the beauty of the print but also that little reminder of my future aspiration to own that bag! Adding some wall art that you find beautiful can really transport you somewhere or help you relive fond memories from your home.

5. Look at Things in a Different Light!

Lighting can make such a difference to the look of a room and how it makes you feel. For some more in depth tips about lighting have a look at my previous blog Cosy Interior Lighting Ideas for a Wonderfully Lit Home this Winter

I also love @lumiere_du_jour_uk. Melissa’s instagram posts are always fantastic! Always gorgeously dressed and creating beautiful scenes with her lighting collection. She runs a lighting shop in Tunbridge Wells and has some fabulous lighting for sale. She shows you how lighting can really add some glamour and fun to a room, perfect for some lockdown browsing!

With lighting the smallest details can make such a difference. Some of my lampshades have different coloured inners like pink or gold and this can create such a different mood. Having a play around with the lighting in your home could really change how you feel about a room!

I hope these 5 simple tips have given you an idea or two. Good luck with freshening up your homes, whatever you do - big or small, I hope you can fall back in love with your homes just a little. For now, take care and sending love. Rx
